Art Deco evolved as a Modernist follow-up style to Art Nouveau during the 1930's era.  The austerity imposed by World War I resulted in a reaction to decorate buildings in a lavish and opulent style.  In Scott Fitzgerald words ,the distinctive style of Art Deco was “shaped by all the nervous energy stored up and unexpended in the War.”
